Parkview Health-Indiana's First to Offer Patients eICU® Technology
Opportunity to Improve ICU Care Paves the Way for Deal
October 29th, 2003
VISICU, Inc. creator of the eICU® solution, announced today that Parkview Health based in Fort Wayne, IN, will be the first in the state to offer its critical care patients eICU® care. This contract reflects Parkview Health's commitment to improving patient safety and quality by offering the life saving eICU® technology to its patients. The eICU® solution uses telemedicine, early warning software and electronic monitoring to connect and provide off-site critical care physicians and nurses with the information needed to proactively care for ICU patients. The advanced technology enables Leapfrog ICU patient safety compliance and promises fundamental changes in hospital ICU care. The Parkview installation includes connecting the eICU® facility to ICUs located throughout five of its hospitals in northeastern Indiana.
Charlie Mason, president and CEO of Parkview Health, applauded the move to eICU® care. "At Parkview Health our mission is to provide quality health services and to work to improve the health of our communities." Mason continued, "The eICU® solution will enable us to provide our critical care patients with the best technology available for 24/7 monitoring and proactive care."
"Nothing is scarier than having a family member in the intensive care unit which is why ICU quality and patient safety are key concerns at Parkview Health," stated David Holloway, MD, senior vice president & chief quality officer for Parkview Health. Holloway added, "The eICU® solution will help us to provide better minute-to-minute quality care and intervene before little problems evolve and become more complicated to manage. Many have compared this attentiveness to flying an airplane using autopilot-frequent small course corrections keep the plane on a safe course."
"We are delighted to add Parkview Health which is clearly one of the most progressive healthcare providers in Indiana, to our growing family of eICU® users," stated Frank T. Sample, VISICU
president and CEO. Sample added, "As a pillar of quality in Indiana, we believe that the eICU® technology will enable Parkview Health to further demonstrate their commitment to high quality patient care throughout the entire State."
About VISICU
VISICU, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1998 by two intensivist physicians, is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. The eICU® solution enables hospitals to standardize ICU care across multiple hospitals and leverage scarce intensivist talent. From a centralized eICU®, intensivists and nurse's monitor and care for ICU patients through a high-fidelity telemedicine network that has been likened to air traffic control. Proprietary software is used to proactively manage patient care and electronically connect the "patient to the doctor", 24 x 7. A Cap-Gemini E&Y study of the eICU® system proved the clinical and financial benefits and the eICU® solution is currently the only technology solution that enables hospitals to meet the Leapfrog Group's ICU patient care safety standards. VISICU won the 2001 Healthcare Informatics and Technology Award and in 2002 the eICU® was recognized as one of the Top 100 technical innovations by InfoWorld magazine.
