University of Pennsylvania Health System - First in State to offer eICU® Solution

VISICU ICU Technology to be Offered throughout Health System

April 5th, 2004

Baltimore, MD - VISICU, Inc. creator of the eICU® solution, announced today that the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS), located in Philadelphia, PA, will be the first health system in the Commonwealth to offer its critical care patients the eICU® technology. The contract underscores the commitment of UPHS to continually improve patient safety by providing the highest quality of care to patients in its intensive-care units, or ICUs. The eICU® solution uses high fidelity telemedicine, Smart AlertŪ early warning software and electronic monitoring to connect and provide off-site critical care physicians and nurses with the information needed to proactively care for ICU patients. The around-the-clock advanced technology enables Leapfrog ICU patient safety compliance and provides fundamental changes in hospital ICU care. The contract includes initially connecting the eICU® system to ICUs at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Hospital before rolling the technology out to 121 ICU beds at all four UPHS hospitals.

"The eICU® solution is a sophisticated, proven technology that reinforces our commitment to superior patient care and service excellence while enabling the University of Pennsylvania Health System to continue to bring the future of medicine to residents of the Delaware Valley and beyond," said Ralph W. Muller, Chief Executive Officer of UPHS.

"Penn physicians continue to lead the way in care advancements, including the eICU® solution," added David E. Longnecker, MD, Chief Medical Officer of UPHS. "This technology will enable us to provide the expertise of skilled intensivists across the entire health system around-the-clock, and it will strengthen both our clinical care programs and our resident education programs. The combination of outstanding clinicians and sophisticated technology offers the greatest potential for major leaps in the quality and safety of health care in the future."

"The University of Pennsylvania Health System is consistently identified as one of the best hospital systems in the nation and a recognized world health leader, and we look forward to partnering with this prestigious organization to bring the eICU® technology to patients throughout Pennsylvania," stated Frank T. Sample, VISICU president and CEO.

About VISICU
VISICU, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1998 by two intensivist physicians from Johns Hopkins, is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. The eICU® solution enables hospitals to standardize ICU care across multiple hospitals and leverage scarce intensivist resources. From a centralized eICU® facility, intensivists and nurses monitor and care for ICU patients through a high-fidelity telemedicine network that has been likened to air traffic control. Proprietary software is used to proactively manage patient care and electronically connect the "patient to the doctor", 24 x 7. A study of the eICU® system published in the Journal of Critical Care Medicine (Crit Care Med 2004; 32:31-38) proved the clinical and financial benefits. The eICU® solution is currently the only technology that enables hospitals to meet the Leapfrog Group's ICU patient care safety standards and is continually recognized for its technology innovations. In 2004 VISICU won the Microsoft Healthcare Users Group (MS-HUG) award, in 2002 the eICU® solution was recognized as one of the Top 100 technical innovations by InfoWorld magazine and in 2001 the company won the Healthcare Informatics and Technology Award.
