May 4th, 2004
Washington, DC - The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) is pleased to announce that VISICU, Inc of Baltimore, Maryland has received the 2004 ATA Innovation Award for Telemedicine.
This new award was established to recognize advances in telemedicine including: innovative new technology development or adaptation, novel use of technology leading to innovative health applications and social services support at the individual or community level, creative strategies for removing barriers to implementation and adoption and new ideas, concepts, formulation and paradigms, and new ways of thinking "outside the box".
A panel of distinguished experts in the field of medicine and technology selected VISICU as one of two recipients of the award this year from an extensive list of nominations because of its groundbreaking efforts to provide remote access to intensive care services.
VISICU, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1998 by two intensivist physicians from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. VISICU's product enables hospitals to standardize ICU care across multiple hospitals and leverage scarce intensivist resources. From a centralized eICU® facility, intensivists and nurses monitor and care for ICU patients through a high-fidelity telemedicine network that has been likened to air traffic control. Proprietary software is used to proactively manage patient care and electronically connect the "patient to the doctor", 24 x 7.
The American Telemedicine Association, the oldest and most prestigious telemedicine and e-health association, promotes greater access to medical care via telecommunications technology. Established in 1993 and headquartered in Washington, DC, ATA works closely with medical societies, Congress and others to resolve barriers to the advancement of telemedicine through the professional, ethical and equitable improvement in health care delivery. Membership in the Association is composed of both individual professionals and organizations.
