Provena Health Advances ICU Care
Second Major Health System in Chicago Area Launches VISICU's eICU® Solution
July 20th, 2004
Baltimore, MD-VISICU, Inc., originator of the patent-pending eICU® solution, announced today that Provena Health in Illinois will offer eICU® care to its critical care patients. The eICU® solution uses proprietary early warning software and electronic monitoring to connect and provide off-site intensivists and critical care nurses with the information needed to proactively care for ICU patients. This agreement reflects Provena Health's continuing commitment to improving patient care and quality throughout its six hospital health system in the greater Chicago area and East-Central Illinois.
"The eICU® solution results in superior clinical outcomes thereby reducing complications and saving lives. This is a significant step toward our vision of being the provider of choice in the areas we serve," said William T. Foley, president and chief executive officer for Provena Health. "Our number one goal is to provide the highest quality care to all of our patients and we believe that the eICU® solution is a crucial factor in attaining that goal."
This advanced technology, offered only through VISICU, enables hospitals to meet stringent patient care safety standards and assures fundamental changes in hospital ICU care. The key is that the eICU® solution allows hospitals to leverage their intensivist resources to care for an even larger number of patients simultaneously. The Provena Health installation will ultimately include connecting the eICU® facility to over 100 ICU beds located across all six of their hospitals.
"The coupling of advanced technology with the oversight of care of our most critically ill patients by board certified intensivists has been proven to reduce mortality and complications. We are confident that the eICU® solution will have the greatest impact on improving clinical outcomes across our system," states Margaret Gavigan, Chief Clinical Officer at Provena Health.
"I am pleased to add Provena Health as the second major provider of eICU® care in the Chicago area, said Frank T. Sample, VISICU Chairman and CEO. "The eICU® solution demonstrates Provena Health's commitment to high-quality patient care throughout their health system."
About VISICU
VISICU, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1998 by two intensivist physicians from Johns Hopkins, is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. The patent-pending eICU® solution enables hospitals to standardize ICU care across multiple hospitals and leverage scarce intensivist resources. From a centralized eICU® facility, intensivists and nurses monitor and care for ICU patients through a high-fidelity telemedicine network that has been likened to air traffic control. Proprietary software is used to proactively manage patient care and electronically connect the "patient to the doctor", 24 x 7. A study of the eICU® system published in Critical Care Medicine (Crit Care Med 2004; 32:31-38) proved the clinical and financial benefits. The eICU® solution is currently the only technology that enables hospitals to meet the Leapfrog Group's ICU patient care safety standards and is continually recognized for its technology innovations. In 2004, VISICU won the Microsoft Healthcare Award and the American Telemedicine Association Innovations Award, in 2002, the eICU® solution was recognized as one of the Top 100 technical innovations by InfoWorld magazine and in 2001, the company won the Healthcare Informatics and Technology Award.
