OHIOHEALTH Invests In Patient Safety With Visicu

First Health System in Ohio To Implement eICU® Solution

August 30th, 2004

Baltimore, MD-VISICU, Inc. reports that OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio will make the eICU® solution, VISICU's advanced ICU care model, available to its critically ill patients. This patent-pending technology uses proprietary early warning software and electronic monitoring to connect and provide off-site intensivists and critical care nurses with the data needed to proactively care for ICU patients. This major undertaking by OhioHealth shows their dedication in providing the highest quality patient care.

"As a leader in providing quality healthcare, we are proud to be the pioneer in bringing this advanced technology to Ohio," stated David Blom, President and CEO of OhioHealth. "The eICU solution is truly unique in its ability to leverage scarce healthcare resources to manage more critical care patients while improving quality of care and patient outcomes."

eICU technology, offered only through VISICU, enables hospitals to meet stringent patient care safety standards and assures fundamental changes in ICU care. The eICU solution allows hospitals to leverage their intensivist resources to care for an even larger number of patients simultaneously. The first installation phase at OhioHealth will include 82 ICU beds between Riverside Methodist and Doctors Hospitals. Eventually, the remote eICU facility will be connected to a total of 134 ICU beds across seven OhioHealth hospitals.

"The eICU solution will be a tremendous asset to OhioHealth in helping us provide the highest level of critical care to our patients," stated David Morehead, MD, Senior VP for Medical Affairs and CMO. "The system will fundamentally change the way care is administered so that our patients receive the greatest benefit and our processes undergo continuous improvement."

Amy Imm, MD, eICU Medical Director says "It is exciting to be part of such a revolutionary process regarding ICU care here at OhioHealth. I look forward to working with the hospital ICU staff as we work together to give our patients the best critical care in the state."

"We are pleased that OhioHealth is the first in the state of Ohio to offer the eICU solution," said Frank T. Sample, VISICU Chairman and CEO. "Their decision to work with VISICU in offering this life-saving technology is a clear indicator of OhioHealth's dedication to providing the best available care to their most critical patients."

About VISICU

VISICU, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1998 by two intensivist physicians from Johns Hopkins, is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. The patent-pending eICU® solution enables hospitals to standardize ICU care across multiple hospitals and leverage scarce intensivist resources. From a centralized eICU facility, intensivists and nurses monitor and care for ICU patients through a high-fidelity telemedicine network that has been likened to air traffic control. Proprietary software is used to proactively manage patient care and electronically connect the "patient to the doctor", 24/7. A study of the eICU system published in Critical Care Medicine (Crit Care Med 2004; 32:31-38) proved the clinical and financial benefits. The eICU solution is currently the only technology that enables hospitals to meet The Leapfrog Group's ICU patient care safety standards and is continually recognized for its technology innovations. In 2004, VISICU won the Microsoft Healthcare Award and the American Telemedicine Association Innovations Award. The eICU solution was recognized as one of the Top 100 technical innovations by InfoWorld magazine in 2002, and in 2001, the company won the Healthcare Informatics and Technology Award.
