VISICU Confident in eICU® Technology Patent
Cerner Lawsuit Will Not Impact Offering of the eICU Solution
November 19th, 2004
VISICU, Inc. creator of the eICU® solution, responded today to the lawsuit filed by Cerner Corporation. The suit seeks a judicial declaration that Cerner does not infringe VISICU's eICU® technology patent. VISICU was recently granted U.S. Patent No. 6,804,656 for its innovative solution that provides continuous, expert network critical care services from a remote location (the eICU solution). This technology transforms critical care and has been proven to make a profound difference in patient outcomes and lives saved.
To further protect their valuable technology, VISICU has applied for additional patent rights and fully expects to have many more patents granted. Committed to being the innovation leader in remote critical care, VISICU has gone to great lengths to protect its technology with the original patent as well others that are currently pending. VISICU is confident that the initial patent along with future issues will prevent others from duplicating VISICU's technology.
"VISICU has spent a significant amount of time and energy developing the eICU solution, and has made the commitment to develop a strong patent portfolio to protect its technology", says VISICU Chairman and CEO, Frank Sample. "We are confident that it is a good and solid patent."
Currently, there are 25 health systems where the eICU solution is in use or contracted for installation in the United States.
VISICU, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1998 by two intensivist physicians from Johns Hopkins, is headquartered in Baltimore, MD. The patented eICU® solution enables hospitals to standardize ICU care across multiple hospitals and leverage scarce intensivist resources. From a centralized eICU facility, intensivists and nurses monitor and care for ICU patients through a high-fidelity telemedicine network that has been likened to air traffic control. Proprietary software is used to proactively manage patient care and electronically connect the "patient to the doctor", 24/7. A study of the eICU system published in Critical Care Medicine (Crit Care Med 2004; 32:31-38) proved the clinical and financial benefits. The eICU solution is currently the only technology that enables hospitals to meet The Leapfrog Group's ICU patient care safety standards and is continually recognized for its technology innovations. In 2004, VISICU won the Microsoft Healthcare Award and the American Telemedicine Association Innovations Award. The eICU solution was recognized as one of the Top 100 technical innovations by InfoWorld magazine in 2002, and in 2001, the company won the Healthcare Informatics and Technology Award.
